Farzana Gandhi
Bio
Farzana Gandhi, LEED AP, is principal of FG Design Studio, an independent platform for architectural design, competitions and research pushing innovation within socially conscious and sustainable thought. Farzana is interested in solutions that pose critical questions and analyze cultural, social, and environmental implications, thereby revealing new possibilities for the way people interact with each other as well as with the built environment. She recently built and installed a winning proposal for [spot], a national design competition as part of Design Philadelphia Design Week.
Farzana is also a Visiting Assistant Professor of Architecture at the New York Institute of Technology, where she has taught introductory and advanced architecture design studios as well as drawing seminars for over 4 years. Since 2009, she has acted as Director of the NYIT Exploring Architecture in Manhattan Program, a summer program for high school students and mid-career professionals interested in pursuing a career in architecture. Farzana is also Co-Coordinator of the Visualization Sequence, acting to re-develop the curriculum in light of emerging digital technologies and contemporary fabrication techniques.
This Spring 2011, Farzana is teaching both a Parametric Performance Elective and an Architecture Thesis Studio called “Tech in Check.” The research studio embraces generative design processes, while keeping them “in check,” by encouraging students to test designs against a set of meaningful performance parameters defined by scale, function and environmental variables.
In her spare time, Farzana is actively involved as Chair and Founder of Design in 5, a group of the Architectural League of New York, formed for designers of all disciplines 5 years of less out of school. The group has organized a number of programs to date including “Drinks with a Designer” events and several “Sketch120 Charrettes” with invited juries on topics such as Scaffolding and Trash in Public Spaces.
Farzana graduated with a Master in Architecture with Distinction from the Harvard Graduate School of Design. At the University of Pennsylvania, she graduated Phi Beta Kappa with a Bachelor of Arts in Architecture as well as a Bachelor of Arts in Spanish with Distinction. At both institutions, she received highest honors for design and academic excellence. Until recently, Farzana was also working as Project Manager at Wendy Evans Joseph Architecture, where she was directly involved with the design of a number of award winning projects.
